Babywearing

I got my first sling when Kate was about 3 months old and I wish I'd had it earlier! It was especially invaluable on the buses in Scotland! We didn't have a car in Edinburgh, and bringing a stroller on the bus was generally a real pain. And now that I have two children, despite having a car again, I don't know what I'd do without it! I can attend to Kate without having to put a crying baby down, and it's easy to get Will to fall asleep in the sling. In the grocery store, I can wear Will and put Kate in the cart seat.

Here's a good article from The Natural Child Project called "Ten Reasons to Wear Your Baby." Apparently, it is quite good for babies to be carried as much as possible, especially in the first few months when they are transitioning from womb to world.

What kind of sling did you use? Most of my friends have ring slings, but the pouch sling (a moby??) looks comfier.

I had a Sling Ezee (also called a Sling Easy). It was a basic ring sling. The Moby does look comfy! For me, it's important that I be able to nurse a baby in a sling--and that's easier in some than others. If you go to the Sling Station website, there is a comparison chart showing which slings are best for babies of different ages, which ones you can nurse in, etc.

Great site! It was the pouch sling I was looking at, not the Moby. :-) I couldn't use one with Ella b/c she was in a harness for her hips for 3 months. But I want to put one on my Christmas list this year.

Was Ella breech? I remember you said she was born by c-section, and I know the breech position can cause hip problems. Kate was breech but her hips were fine.

Let me know how you like the pouch! By the way, does your interest in slings correspond to any sort of news? ;)

Not breech -- the C section was due to hypertension. I guess it was just the way she was positioned in utero her hip sockets weren't deep enough.

It does! Doc on Wednesday -- calendar says 7 weeks but I'm thinking more like 5 weeks so I wanted to wait and confirm everything before I blog about it. Happened 6 mos earlier than we had anticipated, but that's OK! :-)

Congratulations!!! Very exciting.

You know, I got my sling off of Ebay, and I see the Slingstation has a bargain section as well. Even if you got one carrier new as a gift, you might want another eventually--like an Ergo for carrying an older child on your back.
