Need ideas for more fun things to do

There are lots of fun things to do in Caronport. We go visit Daddy at his office, play at Moms and Tots group, enjoy the slide and swings at the Tot Lot, read at the Briercrest bookstore or the college library, walk on the prairie road of course, visit the Subway or the Starbucks, go get our mail from the tiny Caronport post office, listen to the musicians practicing in the worship department, join Daddy at seminary chapel, etc! At home we do playdoh, sing songs, read books, and all those typical toddler activities. Sometimes, however, we run out of ideas!

So, please share fun activities that can be done with an almost 3 year old, either inside or outside! What do you do with your kids? Or what did you enjoy as a kid?

Hello Erin: I stumbled onto your blog by accident through another blog so hope you don't mind that I read some of it. Anyway, I was thinking back to my 3 year old son and activities for him. Do you have any Tupperware type containers where Kate could spend time taking lids off and on? Sometimes I would hide little treats in some of the containers and as Elijah played with them he would discover mini snacks or a new little toy he wasn't expecting. I used to invent "messy stories" when he was tired and bored but not able to sleep. I would invent stories about a little boy named Elijah (of course) and all the crazy messes he made (and how he cleaned them up too!). You could adapt them for a girl. Outside there were always flowers and rocks and cool stuff that became much more interesting when Mommy told him about them and then let him touch and feel them and describe what they felt like. Glueing them onto construction paper was fun. We did a lot of rolling around on the lawn together and laughing, making up dances on the grass or driveway. Just simple things but they passed the time and assisted the creative process for us both. Get some sand in a big box with a lid, some short shallow trays of water and pails and shovels and invent a beach in the summer in the yard. Hope some of these little ideas are helpful.

Hi Sue! Those are some great ideas! And the warmer weather will facilitate trying them out! Thanks!!

Audrey is really into digging in the dirt for worms and planting a garden. Good summer activities (hopefully it's warm enough to do that up in the tundra of Canada):) We play a lot of hide n seek or I-spy as well!

Thanks Amy! Great ideas! Yes, fortunately Canada has nice hot summers--a welcome relief after the bitter winter!

We also like to make cookies :) it's a good rainy day activity - and Kate could help stir and decorate. We often buy the premade sheets of sugar cookie dough where Audrey can make cutouts and it comes with icing too so Audrey "helps" spread the icing and puts sprinkles on. She loves it! This is funny but she also loves to "clean" so I give her a squirt bottle of water and a washcloth and she goes to town on the kitchen floor. She thinks it's a big treat and I'm of course trying to encourage any help with cleaning!!

Anything to get some help around the house!

I'll have to look for the premade sugar cookie dough sheets! The nice thing about having a wee one is that it's a good excuse to make yummy things. It wouldn't have anything to do with my own sweet tooth, of course! ;)

Hi Erin,

Sorry we've never met! I went to Hillsdale with Eric. :-)

I have a 9 mo and 7 year old and I bought a gigantic bag of beans and dumped it in to a huge storage bin to make an indoor "sand" box. Spoons, measuring cups, and hands are all used to dump and pour. They absolutely love it.

I've also seen commercially made "Water Tables" for the summer where kids dump water through things and I'm planning to recreate one myself this summer.

Also, check out Family Fun (it's a magazine and a website). It's put out by Disney and is chock full of ideas and things to do with kids. It's my absolute favorite resource!

Your kids may be too little yet, but check out letterboxing (just google it). Our 7 year old loves it, it gets us outside and active, and we can do it wherever we go.

I hope those are useful for you.

Best,
Cammie (Van Buren) Gabel

Thanks Cammie! Great ideas! I know we've never met but Eric speaks highly of you from his days at Hillsdale. :)
