Why I like cloth diapers

Will is big enough now to fit into the cloth diapers! Yea! I probably never would have tried cloth except the City of Edinburgh Council had an incentive program, and I got some free from them. It saved the Council money on trash removal. I didn't have anything to lose so I tried them. Why did I stick with them and buy even more? Because:

*They're not that difficult or time consuming. Especially now that I actually have a dryer! The new designs have snaps or velcro, so no folding or pins required! No soaking either--I just throw them in the pail and wash when it's full.
*They seem like they would be so comfortable for the babies, especially those that are fleece-lined or with fleece liners inserted.
*It saves a lot of money, especially when using the same diapers on subsequent children.
*With a diaper and a wrap, there are two lines of defense! ;)
*I can use cloth wipes as well and just throw them in with the diapers.
*I'd rather do laundry than take out the trash.

Any others who prefer cloth?

I have used cloth on a couple of kids I nanny for and think it's so much more pleasant than disposables. I will definitely use cloth! I also have started knitting wool diaper covers (soakers, longies) at the request of a friend and it is so much fun - I can't imagine using ugly disposables anymore! :)

That's so cool you know how to knit diaper covers. Can they be washed like regular diaper covers?

Hi Erin! I am so glad you commented on my blog. I have been frantically trying to work out how to get in touch with you. (Our old computer died and we have been trying to get it repaired for some time. All my email addresses etc are stuck on it.)

If you still have my email address can you please email me so that I can get in touch that way?

Congratulations on baby Will!

oh yeah, I am all over the cloth diaper scene - expecially in the city where I have a service - someone actually picks up all my dirties and leaves me a bag full of fresh new clean ones at my door. Man. Can't get enough.

April, I emailed you!

Rachel, that is nice! Do you find that it still saves money over disposables? Not that saving money is the only reason to do cloth!

We love our fuzzi bunz!

Bethany, you're doing cloth! That's wonderful! I've heard good things about Fuzzi Bunz.

I guess I'm in the minority. We used cloth with Adam for awhile - M&D got us a 3 month (or so) service. After that, went to disposable and the other two had disposable.

It's been awhile since I've had to think about that and I've probably created my own landfill heap, but from what I've read the amount of laundry-ing and such, isn't much better for the environment so I dunno.

I guess I'm glad I won't have to make that choice anymore!

I think you're in the majority Lori! Just one of those things where it's good to have choices! We definitely use disposables too--when we're out and about, or traveling.

I'm always looking for ways to pinch pennies (I'm with you on the used clothing stores!) so I ordered a Fuzzi Bunz to try out. Here's my question(s), though: how often do you have to do laundry for the diapers and then how many do you have? And where do you put the dirty diapers between wearing and washing? :-) I don't have one friend using cloth so no one has a clue!

Hi Camille! Well, it depends. I have a bucket with a lid (generic from Walmart). When it gets full, I wash. I probably have about 20 diapers of different kinds, and then 4 wraps. Some of my diapers are just cheap prefolds though. Email me at ekortlund@juno.com if you want me to connect you specifically with someone who uses Fuzzi Bunz. Or email me for any general questions!
