Every day, I dig out at least a couple hundred dandelions. And every morning, I look out and see the yard covered with a couple hundred more of them. Obviously, we were not very vigilant last summer and let too many of them go to seed. I don't want to use weed killer, since the kids are all over the lawn. I am very interested in corn gluten meal, however, a natural weed preventative that can be applied in the spring and fall. Here are some companies that sell it if you're interested, along with the product name. Has anyone used this before?

I just can't believe that you dig out a few hundred per day. I would've given up long ago and let the dandelions rule my yard!! Really, isn't a field of dandelions beautiful? :)

I don't mind the yellow flowers, but the weedy leaves are ugly. Really, if I don't dig them out, the yard will be dandelions than grass. It is a pain though--I'm just hopeful one day I'll wake up and there will only be a few popping up.
It's a bit late now, but for next year, before they flower, you can use the leaves as salad leaves.
The flowers are apparently edible too.
Thanks Lindsay! I'm getting discouraged and I may just keep digging them out of the front yard while ignoring them in the backyard.
I used the corn gluten but didn't notice much difference; however, I thought I used it for crab grass. Maybe that's why it didn't work properly!
On an entirely different note: We're driving to BC from Ontario and were wondering about hotels west of Moose Jaw but east of Medicine Hat. The day in question we're starting from Winnipeg and don't think we'll make it as far as Medicine Hat. My question concerns whether you know if there are a good number of hotels between Mooose Jaw and say, Swift Current? We'd like to drive as long as possible that day but don't want to have to drive farther than we'd like because of lack of accomodation. Any information you have, if you can help, would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
We have the Pilgrim Inn here in Caronport--right now there's a sign on the highway saying something like "The Pilgrim Inn: last chance before Swift Current." So I would think that indicates a lack of accommodation on that stretch of highway. But I don't know for sure! Good luck!
Thanks a lot for that information. My memory about driving across quite a bit of the prairies is that motels can be few and far between. I'll wave as I go through Caronport. Which side of the road should I face? :))
Cara (I'm having trouble getting my name to appear on my comments. Sorry.
Caronport is only on the north side of the highway. Hey--when is your trip? Feel free to stop by for a cup of tea. You can reach me at ekortlund at juno dot com
